The female version of man caves are she sheds: havens to escape that can be designed and decorated in whatever style the owner desires. Inspired by a tiny hummingbird viewed nearby, this shed is aptly named Hummingbird Cottage. Lovely photos on Instagram reveal that the shed is used for art projects, as a retreat, displaying vintage pottery, and for entertaining friends. Extras like a hanging faux-crystal chandelier, potted flowering plants, wreaths, and stained glass give it a personal touch.
This structure is quite different from all the sheds presented so far. First of all, it’s not actually a shed but just a structure with a design similar to that of a shed but one that you can walk right through. Still, it’s perfect for storing garden tools in and it has a simple, rustic charm. The image is completed by the stone path leading to this pseudo-shed.
Test-fit the pattern rafter and adjust its notches. When it fits accurately all along the beams, use it to mark and cut the remaining rafters. First, cut all the rafters to length. Then clamp together all the rafter stock, including the pattern rafter, edge up. Mark and cut all of the notches to match the pattern rafter. Use a chisel to finish each notch.
This step is easier with two people. Start by measuring the length of the ceiling then cut the amount of straw cladding you need – allow a 5cm surplus. You will need two lengths. While one person holds the straw cladding in place the other can nail it in place. Hit the nail in until secure then hammer it at a 90-degree angle so it holds the straw cladding in place. Put nails in every 15-20 cm to secure.
The post holes should be about 4 feet apart. Set up batter boards and mason's string to mark these points. The intersections of the string indicate the locations of a post corner. Use the 3-4-5 method described above to check for square at each intersection. Adjust the string along the batter boards as necessary and mark the location of the string on the batter boards.
Pasadena, California, is known for its Craftsman style homes, a great number of which have been carefully preserved and restored. Owned by a University of Southern California (USC)-educated architect, Nott & Associates specializes in the Craftsman style. For a backyard shed, Nott custom designed and constructed the wooden doors, which include period-perfect details and hardware.
After nailing the walls together at the corners, install temporary diagonal braces on the inside to hold the walls plumb (Photo above). Make sure the walls are firmly nailed together at the corners. Then use a level to plumb the corners while you attach temporary diagonal bracing to the inside of the walls. Brace all four walls. You can remove the bracing after you install the siding panels.

This shed brings together antiquity and modernity. It has the simple and clean modern look. It starts with the simple fours walls and simple slanted roof. However, the decoration is different. The bronze paint color gives it more of a rustic feel. Plus some of the knick knacks are more reminiscent that the shed style is. It is one of those garden shed ideas that takes advantage of the best of both worlds. IDEA # 21: Be creative and see how you can bring two different decoration styles together in an attractive way.
Water is wood's worst enemy. Given the right circumstance and enough time, excessive moisture can rot framing, warp floors and doors, corrode hinges and breed mold and mildew. Fortunately, there's an easy remedy. First, be sure that the lowest wood member--the mudsill--is at least 6 in. above the ground. That's sufficient space to allow fresh air to circulate under the shed.
Mark the position of the rafters along the beams at 16-inch centers and carefully nail them in place. We even went so far as to set each nailhead to firmly pinch the rafter down against the beam. We nailed the front fascia in place and moved on to the skip sheathing for the roofing. Note that two pieces of sheathing are nailed on at the peak and at the base. The rest are spaced evenly between them.
It's important to accurately place the footings, or piers—it makes the build quicker and easier by preventing constant remeasuring and adjustment. We set the four corner piers in rough position and brought them into alignment with a string line. Then we used a tape measure to check the diagonals of this rectangle and to position the fifth and sixth piers relative to the perimeter.
Additional options include ready-built sheds that are shipped completely assembled. Find out if these will need to be finished, sanded, and painted or stained. Prefab and already-built sheds are an attractive concept, but investigate shipping costs. Consider feasibility and logistically how you'll manage the project. Some sheds are delivered by a truck equipped with a crane. Will the crane be able to drive on your property and deliver the building without tearing down walls or fences or plowing over a lawn or garden?
Turn any outdoor shed space into a space fit for a booming garden party with festive lights, such as these decorative garden lights. The bulbs hang elegantly above the heads of your guests during your next cocktail party, lighting up space and conversation with their calming glow. These string lights do not have to be so expensive, as there are so many brands and designs to choose from.
The design of the shed you choose will depend on what you will be using it for and were it will be located. If you just need a small shed to place garden equipment, a lean to shed can be ideal. This design of shed will not take much room and it can be placed next to a fence or wall. The lean to shed has a single sloped roof design. It is one of the most common for garden tools as well as pool equipment and chemicals.

It's obvious that the designer who created simple shed designs like this one wanted to create an outdoor place to relax out of the sun and weather. The simple 2×4 framing and plywood sheathing add an interesting and low-cost touch. But, it’s the owner's use of a pair of sliding glass doors that make this shed so special. Here again, you could save money by sourcing many of the materials such as the doors from a local salvage dealer.
I'm always surprised at how little forethought most backyard builders give to the shed's doors. After all, there's no sense in building a shed to store a particular item, such as a lawn tractor or wheelbarrow, if you can't fit it through the door. I saw a shed recently that had its doors removed. When I asked why, the homeowner explained that he framed the doorway wide enough for his riding lawnmower, but didn't take into account the amount of space taken up by the hinged inset doors. So, he had to remove the doors to fit the mower inside. (He's in the market for a skinnier mower.)
Stand the timber upright on its edge and push and pull it backwards and forwards across the frame while dragging it from one end to the other and this will level it roughly. Next, lift the board at both ends about 4 inches above the frame and tap it back down on the frame, moving up and down the frame as you do so. Try and tap together so both ends of the board hit the frame at the same time.
It’s no surprise that most sheds are designed to be built with an on-grade foundation. This base is quick and easy to build, relatively inexpensive, and adaptable enough to accommodate all but the most severely sloping sites. In addition, the components are small and light enough to easily set into place and shift around, making it very easy to get everything square and level. Although it’s not technically a “permanent” foundation, an on-grade foundation, when properly built, will probably outlast the shed it supports.
This cottage potting shed takes design cues from the main house, using the same earthy green and white paint colors. Extras like a deck, stone path, and cottage-style mixed planting borders make the backyard shed design feel more like a home than just an outbuilding. Several garden shed decorating ideas, like lace curtains in the windows, a quaint bench, and outdoor art also add homey appeal. In a practical move, downspouts ensure rain doesn’t damage the plants that surround the building.

Hello, Sarah! This is my first time reading your blog, and I think this is a very fun idea. I had never heard of a “Pub shed” before, some place you could use for drinks/snacks/entertaining, but also for much needed extra storage in the house! I’m not a DIYer, but I know I get challenged getting all entertainment center, mini music studio, and mini gym/training area in one bedroom, but I manage! haha! It will be fun to see how you get this project done.

P.S. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irma hit my area and knocked out power, downed a few trees, blocked my neighborhood’s entrance, etc. but the UDH was thankfully fine. I just have a few extra downed limbs to chop up for the new fire pit. I hope those of you impacted are, above all, safe — including your pets. And I’ll be saying a prayer for those who weren’t as lucky. Thanks for those of you who have sent comments my way via social media. 💜
This charming backyard garden shed has been transformed into a beautiful art studio. Not only is the space relaxing, but also the fact that it was constructed from a shed makes the space much more affordable than having to go and build and office space from scratch. Once you have the groundwork done and your shed layout, you can decorate it any way you choose to make it uniquely you.
I think it might depend on which type of deck blocks you’re talking about. If you’re referencing the deck blocks that you might find at Home Depot, they have one that can be used for 4×4’s. 4×4 fits in the plate. Some of the deck blocks are suited to 2x4s, not the 4×4’s our installers use for the foundations of our sheds. I hope that helps. Have a great day!

Factor in size, because a really small shed probably won't be ideal for a bar. Think about how many people you plan to host on a regular basis, as well as your ideal seating (stools take up less room than a booth). Keep in mind that your local building department might have a size restriction on backyard sheds built without a permit. Around 120 square feet is usually a safe bet.
This wood shed plan keeps wood open and dry and easy to access. This sort of open firewood shed is good if you live in a place where it stays fairly dry in the winter. If you have a lot of snow, it might be an issue. But overall, this simple, sturdy design of a storage shed plan is a great start. You can easily store a full cord or more in this size of shed.

Without the correct base erecting a shed can prove very tricky. It is extremely important that all garden buildings are constructed on a firm and level base which is constructed from the correct, durable material. Assembling the base incorrectly can lead to future deterioration of the product such as doors dropping out of square, thus becoming complicated to use or causing a water leakage.

We built inexpensive windows for the shed using plastic barn sash mounted in 1×4 pine frames (Photo above and Figure Q and R). Start by measuring the sash and building a 1×4 frame that’s 1/4 in. wider and taller than the sash. Cut 10-degree angles on the bottom of the sides to provide a sloping sill. Cut 1×2 stops to fit in the frame and position them to hold the sash flush with the outside edge of the 1×4 frame. Then attach galvanized screen door hinges to the frame, set the sash in place and drill holes for the fasteners. Since the plastic isn’t strong enough to hold wood screws, we drilled holes through the sash and attached the hinges with machine screws, washers and nuts.
There may be a pile of wood in the backyard that looks like it should be disposed of. However, with a little care and creativity, it can be made into a rustic looking shed that fits in a backwoods or backyard garden area. A little creative piecework, and cleaning old wood can become a beautiful piece of art. A coat of clear coat paint could bring out the aged beauty and protect the wood for years. IDEA: Repurpose your old wood and turn it into a piece of art in your garden.
This shed studio is the perfect place for relaxing, getting some work done, or even living in! You can make shelves using blocks that are left over when you dismantle the pallets and you could use left over pallet wood or ply wood. I used some old decking off cuts. Drill two blocks on to the wall – good to use a spirit level to get these straight, then lay the pallet wood/ply wood/decking cut to size on top and screw the shelf onto the blocks.
Complete the siding, then remove the toe-screws and move the wall aside to make room for constructing the opposite wall. Use the same chalk line template and process to build the opposite end wall. Figure C (in Additional Information below) shows framing details for the front wall. Mark the curves on the 2×10 header pieces using the trammel setup shown in Photo 12 and Figure G (in Additional Information below). Cut them with a jigsaw. When you’re done building the front and back walls, set them aside so you can use the platform to build the roof sections.
