I really like the 16 x 16 Aspen and I’m currently installing my foundation and slab with a tentative purchase intent with your company. Our code here is, maximum of 256 sq. ft. shed without a permit. I’ve excavated -2′ around the perimeter and – 6″ for the pad. Right now I’m at that point of decision of concrete footer or not. I can fill my footer area with compacted 30D stone, then level the pad to grade or I could form and pour these footers which will cost a lot more bennies. I plan to frame the 16 x 16 pad for 6″ of concrete and call it a day. A few questions please; Will compacted stone under a concrete pad be sufficient for your shed? Can the shed be built without the floor in the quote if I have the concrete pad? What exact dims should that concrete pad be for your 16×16 Aspen? Thanks for your help, now back to work!
Check with your local building department to see whether a permit is required. Also find out if there are rules about where your pub shed can be located on the lot. Take the Materials List (in the project pdfs below) with you to your favorite lumberyard or home center and go over the list with the salesperson to see what items you may have to order. Then set up a delivery so you’ll be ready to build the pub shed when your help arrives. A few days before you plan to dig, call 811 for instructions on how to locate buried utility lines. Now it’s time to start building your pub shed.

This interesting cube-shaped building is definitely not a shed. Not the way the builder used slats on three sides to provide plenty of ventilation for those evening meals in the great outdoors. Note that the entire back wall is solid to help keep the weather out, you could add outdoor curtains to help block any excess breezes and keep out the rains. Do this by stacking treated 2x6s, 4x6s or 6x6s on top of the treated 6×6 to reach the right height. Use a 4-ft. or longer level to make sure the 6x6s are level and level with each other. Finally, square the 6x6s by adjusting the position of one 6×6. Slide the 6×6 back and forth, not sideways, until the diagonal measurements from opposite corners are equal. Build the platform with treated 2x6s, 24 in. on center, and cover it with treated 3/4-in. plywood (Figure B).

Using wooden pegs and string, mark out the desired base size adding 2" to each length, for example: for an 8x6 base you would need to string mark 8'2"x6'2". Measure from corner to corner to ensure the area marked out is square. The concrete base cna be level with the surrounding soil or raised above. If you require a level with the ground base you need to excavate the area to a depth of around 6" to allow for 3" of hardcore/sub-base and 3" of concrete. Level the area with a rake and remove the pegs and string.

Hello, I plan on purchasing the 16×24 two story Everest and converting into livable cabin. I am in process of demolishing dilapidated cabin currently on site and then plan on installing footer and concrete slab. There will be 1 bathroom and small kitchen on 1st floor. Do you have any recommendations for slab (4 inch vs. 6 inch)? Any thoughts on best way to run piping? Should I give slab installer any specific directions (anchors, etc.)? Does slab need to be exactly 16×24 or should it be slightly larger? Do I need to send the schematic I prepared showing location of windows and doors?

It’s a two-level structure and the second story is a quiet and relaxing area, like a mini-bedroom. In this case, both the interior and exterior designs are elegant. This fantastic outdoor space has been termed the “She-Shed” due to its high function and feeling of being a getaway. The shed we built rests on a foundation made up of 12 solid-concrete blocks. The 4 x 8 x 16-in. blocks are arranged in three rows spaced 59 in. apart. These blocks are typically set directly on the ground, but we put down a 4-in. bed of gravel first because our site occasionally receives groundwater. The gravel will keep the soil beneath the shed from eroding or becoming soggy.

Did you always want to dine outside? Well, this is your chance. Although it looks a bit like a box of matches, this space may be exactly what your yard lacks. It is obviously not suitable for storage and it’s not available as a building kit but it sure adds some elegance to your backyard. It’s not very cheap either, but this depends on the contractor.
For a seating area I cut 4 x 18 inch lengths of 3x3 post and I had some 12mm thick wood that I used for the seat but you could use ply board (I recommend 18mm for strength). Simply cut the ply to size then drive a screw through the ply board into the posts. Once made then use corner braces to secure in place to add that extra strength and make sure you test it out before you use it. If you are making a longer seating area then you may need more posts in the middle for support.

Almost acting as a storage closet, this nifty space definitely does not take up too much space and can almost just blend into the background. This simple shed design features steel building siding that comes in wide sheets. These sheets allow you to cover large areas, are typically easy to put up, and are incredibly strong. You can buy new sheet metal or seek out one of the many used building material vendors in your area to help keep costs under control. Before beginning to build any foundation for your shed, consult your local building inspector to determine what type of foundation you will need. The decision will be based on the height and size of your storage shed. Regardless of the size of your shed, a building inspector needs to make sure that the storage building is up to code for your local area.
Dig trenches about 12 in. wide and about 10 in. below where you want the bottom edge of the joists to end up. Pour 4 in. of gravel into the trenches and level it off. Make sure the gravel in all three trenches is at the same height. Then cut the 6x6s to 12 ft. long and set them in the trenches. Measure to make sure  the 6x6s are parallel. Then measure diagonally from the ends of the outside 6x6s to make certain they’re square. The diagonal measurements should be equal. Finally, level the 6x6s (Photo above and Figure B in project pdfs).
Before you cover the joists with the 4 x 8-ft. sheets of flooring, plumb and brace the 4×4 posts with diagonal 2x4s. Also stretch a string or mason’s line from front to back along the top edge of the outside joist to make sure the walls and joists  are straight. The attic floor needs to be square and have straight sides. If not, the rafters won’t fit correctly.

This is a very beautiful shed and it matches the main house that was originally designed by J. Merrill Brown back in 1887. In fact, it’s like a miniature version of the main residence. If wet weather is forecast, cover the concrete with polythene for 24-hours. In warm weather, cover the base with damp sacks and sprinkle them with water over the 24-hour period, this will ensure the drying concrete will not shrink and crack. The result will be a smooth, sound and level base. The perfect foundation for the construction of a garden shed.
Set up a levelled formwork. This involves measuring, cutting and fitting timber to the shape of the base in order to contain the concrete. Check diagonal measurements to ensure the formwork is square and level as this will determine whether your shed base is 100% sturdy. Next, spread a layer ofwell-compactedd hardcore (all-in ballast or crushed gravel) and cover with a liberal amount of sand. This needs be well compacted and flattened down, preferably with a compacting tool or roller.
Generally, smaller sheds of up to 8×6 do not need a foundation. Small sheds can be rested on crushed stone with either treated wood foundations or concrete foundation blocks. Large sheds will need to have strong foundations. Considering Backyard Buildings smallest shed size is 8×8, all of our sheds will need a foundation setup prior to the arrival of one of our installers.
Start by marking the joist locations on the two side joists using Figure H (in project pdfs) as a guide. Then cut and install the joists (Photo above).  Mark the joist locations on two rim joists and nail the rims to the top plate. Make sure they are set in 1-1/2 in. from the outside edge of the wall to allow space for the second rim joist. Attach the joists with screws or nails driven through the rim joists. Then add the second rim joist and install joist hangers on every joist.
This shed is outstanding because it is built of materials that are still close to their raw form. A wooden shed fits in better with nature. Vinyl sheds or buildings built of other materials, can be can be great for some situations. However for a natural environment wood is much better. First of all wood is a natural product. Secondly it fits better in a woodsy area. IDEA: Just to say you can do it, build a shed with 1) natural products and 2) products that are as much in their raw form as possible.
