The roof panels are heavy and a bit awkward, so round up three strong helpers for this part of the job. Move the panels into position and lean them against the front and back walls. Then set up ladders inside the building for two helpers and push one of the panels up to them. Slide the panel up the roof until the bird’s-mouths drop over the top plate of the wall.

A wooden base is sufficient for most smaller sheds. It’s basically a simple wooden frame, strengthened with crossbeams, onto which you build your shed. Check the weight of your shed and its contents. If you intend to install a large garden building - anything larger than 10 x 8 feet - or store a lot of heavy equipment, consider a paving slab or concrete base instead.

Many people are switching to the renewable, efficient, and affordable fuel we all know as wood. Wood burning stoves and furnaces are built to be highly effective at making the most out of the energy potential in wood, while being extremely safe, and of course in some instances a beautiful and comforting fixture in any home. Burning wood properly is also clean. Gathering enough wood to keep the wood burning furnace roaring is a process that takes time and space, which is something that needs to be carefully considered. Wood needs to be kept dry, off of the ground, and in a place that’s easy to access. Wood sheds are essential to the home that heats with wood. If you’re thinking of saving some money by building your own firewood storage shed, we’ve got 10 great wood shed plans to get you started.
Once you have a pile of pallet wood start by laying bits of wood on the floor. If you have different sizes and shades then mix them up to get a great effect. Start in the top corner and screw the boards in place using an electric screwdriver with screws long enough to go through the pallet wood and floor of the shed.  You’ll need to cut some pieces to size so use the tape measure to mark the wood then cut using a saw of choice.  Once the floor is down then line all the walls apart from the doors and eaves.
This interesting cube-shaped building is definitely not a shed. Not the way the builder used slats on three sides to provide plenty of ventilation for those evening meals in the great outdoors. Note that the entire back wall is solid to help keep the weather out, you could add outdoor curtains to help block any excess breezes and keep out the rains. What a great way to create your own outdoor family room!
This father and daughter duo turned a standard garden shed into a wonderfully magical space together. This shed has two levels, an upstairs and a downstairs area, so his daughter can move freely about the space and draw inspiration. This just goes to show how much can be done when you put your mind to it and have a bit of ingenuity. What a cool space!

I’m looking at putting a 10 x 12 shed in our back yard (Michigan). I’m wondering what would be recommended – if anything – for a base. It looks like, from the installation process photos, that the builder will assemble the foundation and can put that directly onto the grass. Our ground is level enough – within the 6″ required – so I don’t think that would be an issue. It sounds like – from what i am reading – that I wouldn’t NEED to do anything to prepare in terms of putting down stone or anything. Is that correct?

Thank you for visiting our blog. Yes, the 16×16 Aspen is a great choice as it offers lots of storage space and overall value. We would recommend footers that are slightly smaller than your typical one car garage. Considering ground movement, you definitely want that slab on a solid foundation to keep from cracking. Yes, the concrete pad can act as a floor with no wood floor needed, the bottom plate has to be a treated material. You’ll want anchor bolts placed in the concrete to place the treated plate to hold the shed to the concrete floor. THe shed is a true 16’x16′, so 192”x192″ are the dimensions. Great questions. This is dependent completely on the size of your shed. For the majority of our Wooden Sheds, there are preattached bearers on the underside of the floor running the length of the building. However, for the 10x8 and 12x8 buildings with 28x44mm framing, the bearers will run the width. You will need to take this into account when planning the number and size of additional timber bearers you require – here’s a few examples;

Turn any outdoor shed space into a space fit for a booming garden party with festive lights, such as these decorative garden lights. The bulbs hang elegantly above the heads of your guests during your next cocktail party, lighting up space and conversation with their calming glow. These string lights do not have to be so expensive, as there are so many brands and designs to choose from.

Start by marking the joist locations on the two side joists using Figure H (in project pdfs) as a guide. Then cut and install the joists (Photo above).  Mark the joist locations on two rim joists and nail the rims to the top plate. Make sure they are set in 1-1/2 in. from the outside edge of the wall to allow space for the second rim joist. Attach the joists with screws or nails driven through the rim joists. Then add the second rim joist and install joist hangers on every joist.

This tiny shed looks a little more like an old English phone booth than a shed thanks to the glass door. But it definitely looks bigger on the inside. If you look closely, the walls of this shed appear to have been made from exterior grade doors. Not only can this save you a lot of money in supplies, it looks very cool and should be very strong. You can pick up used doors at any building salvage store or your local Habitat for Humanity Store.
When installing a wooden garden shed you must ensure that you have an even and level surface onto which you can build it. This can be created using either a premade wooden shed base, a plastic shed base, solid concrete, garden slabs or even timber decking. Failing to prepare a level surface will lead to your shed warping, which can result in damaged timber or even broken windows. If you're using one of our shed bases you will still need to clear the area for rubble. It's also a good idea to lay a weed/damp proof membranes, to prevent growth and eventual damage to your shed.
Clear plexiglass has been used extensively throughout this shed to provide the level of natural lighting needed to create a private reading shed. Plexiglass is extremely durable and makes the perfect choice for this particular use. Not only does it let in plenty of light, but it will keep out the odd wayward softball. Although plexiglass can be a little on the expensive side, you should find the investment more than worthwhile when you see how long it lasts.

After nailing the walls together at the corners, install temporary diagonal braces on the inside to hold the walls plumb (Photo above).  Make sure the walls are firmly nailed together at the corners. Then use a level to plumb the corners while you attach temporary diagonal bracing to the inside of the walls. Brace all four walls. You can remove the bracing after you install the siding panels.
